Society That Accepts Freedom of Religion!

Believe me when I say; the concept of religion for me is that simple. As long as you have faith, follow it. If you have different perspective, change it. You do not believe in religion? Be an atheist!

Our high school used to organize Inter School Science Exhibition. We were assigned groups as per our caliber and ideologies to participate in the exhibition. But to my dismay, I was not very comfortable with my group mates. So, I changed it. After two days, my physics teacher came up with an idea to do something different to which my group mates were not in unison. I did that experiment all by myself, leaving the second group too.

Believe me when I say; the concept of religion for me is that simple. As long as you have faith, follow it. If you have different perspective, change it. You do not believe in religion? Be an atheist!

What is the logic behind killing people just because their viewpoint differs? The way people fight over religion, the way the innocents are killed on the name of God, the way they are forced to convert to other religions, the way atheists are treated as aliens – I condemn with all my heart and soul.

The religion and the society exist for our good. And we treat them as tools to show hatred, unaware of the fact that we are cutting the branch we are sitting up on.

Though Durkheim’s theory of religion is criticized by many but I found his concept of ‘Totemism’ worth mentioning. He kept ‘we the humans’ at center stage and evaluated the primitive religion of ‘Totemism’, practiced among The Arunta Tribes of Pacific Ocean.

Totem refers to anything living or non-living except humans that is worshiped as a sacred object – mountain, animal, flower, bird etc.

The primitive men were wanderers and they occasionally met each other. Talking to each other, celebrating and dancing triggered some feelings of contentment and happiness which disappeared when they parted ways. Rather than terming it Socialization, they thought of presence of some supernatural force or magical power. The texts mention it as Mana – impersonal and mysterious powers. Owing to this experience and in order to re-experience that feeling, they came up with the symbol (totem) representing that supernatural force. They started meeting at that point and preaching that totem. This is how the base for religion was laid according to Durkheim.

People following same moral codes and beliefs develop a path for religion; which is an expression of self creation and autonomous development of society. Religion and society have been created for mankind; to strengthen us and not to be a baggage. Parting ways with common beliefs is fine.

We are no one to interfere in lives of others and to force something up on them. ‘Live and let live’. If you feel like something is wrong, feel free to keep your perspective. But you do not have to make sure that the person next to you follows it.

Life is beautiful. It is not about passing judgments, killing people and torturing them mentally. If you believe in the supernatural power, believe in his creations; also believe in the faith of his creations.
